That’s right, I am having a sale! You can get 15% off anything in my artfire or etsy just by mentioning GJCG in the comments when you check out. You may wonder why I decided to do such a thing. Well, GJCG stands for Glass Jewelry Collective Guild. A group of us at one of the glass forums I read started the guild so that self representing artists (SRAs) could promote each other in a helpful cooperative way. It was created to bring our diverse community of glass and jewelry artists, living and practicing all over the world, closer in hope of creating a place and forum to communicate and exchange more easily and on a continual basis. Professional, intermediate, and novice are all welcome to participate. Our focus at the Artfire Guild is on helping promote and sell our work as a group in recognition of the myriad of individual aspects each artist contributes in the field.

Hemp, the cool fiber!

Hemp is another word for the plant Cannabis sativa L. Now this does not mean marijuana, though they are in the same family. For that matter so is broccoli and cauliflower. No, I’m talking about the fiber hemp, or industrial grade, which is making a big comeback. Note that industrial grade hemp doesn’t have very much THC (the stuff in Marijuana that makes someone high) so it really can’t be used as a drug. It is incredibly durable, and makes great jewelry. So I went looking for an example, and who did I find but Etsyblogger’s very own RoseWorksJewelry! As you can see she does a lovely job with it.

One of the neatest things about hemp fiber, other than how quickly it grows, is that the paper made from it is naturally acid free, as is cloth! That makes it great for babies, as you can see in this adorable burp cloth made by Tushcouture.

Now I personally adore Washi paper for card making. Washi is a type of paper made in Japan. Washi is commonly made using fibers from the bark of the gampi tree, the mitsumata shrub, or the paper mulberry, but also can be made using bamboo, hemp, rice, and wheat. Washi comes from wa meaning Japanese and shi meaning paper, and the term is used to describe paper made by hand in the traditional manner. This pendant was made by Prettified over on Artfire. Too cool!

Not to be outdone, there is a lovely piece of art by Pyramidfarms that uses hemp paper in addition to brulage, which is a burning technique. The dark brown paper is made from industrial hemp.

So say hooray for industrial grade hemp!

Well, I must admit that it is super easy to set up a shop on Art Fire. I think I will give things one run on Etsy, and if they don’t sell there switch them over to Art Fire. Listing Frenzy on Etsy

Today is listing frenzy day on Etsy. I’m working on getting up lots of boro pendants and disc beads. I have lots of fun making disc beads, and as a result I have a ton! They make super earrings and necklaces, and there is still time to get them to you so you can make something for your friends for the Holiays! I figure this is going to be my last big listing push of the year. Then I have to finish giving final exams, make my Christmas cards, and get ready to spend 2 weeks visiting my parents. Fun galore!

Preparing for the Holiday Rush

The theme this week for Etsybloggers is how we are preparing our business for the holiday rush. It got me started thinking that maybe I should let people know what I’m doing! First of all, in the next week I’ll be doing a bunch of listings for beads on Etsy. That way people can get them in time to make something for their family, friends, or just something special for themselves. Second, I have my work in a local art gallery for the Holiday Sale! I have earrings and quilted wallhangings there. But you can find anything from pottery to felted pillows, to amazing hand woven scarves. I’ve already done a lot of my shopping there. I hope you can come by and see all the amazing art!

I want to extend a personal invitation to the 2^nd annual Holiday Show and Sale. The Show opens on November 7th from 1 pm to 5pm.
The Arts Center will hold its second annual holiday sale beginning November 7 with a special “Member Shop First” preview from 10 – 1. The regular hours for the Holiday Show and Sale are Wednesday from 10am – 4pm and Thursdays – Sundays from 1-5pm. This special event will provide the community with a unique way to shop for the Holidays. Displayed within the gallery on fine furnishings by Aesthetics of Seneca will be a variety of holiday gifts created by local artists. Approximately 40 artists will be showcased during this seasonal exhibition. Recognizable names such as Denise Woodward, Trish Stalb, Mike Vatalaro, Laura Dahl, Mark Malmgren, Sue Grier, Chris Troy and many more will participate in this year’s Holiday Sale. During the sale, an incredible Art filled basket (retail value over $700!!!!) will be raffled and hot cider will be flowing. Gourmet catered Holiday luncheons featuring live music and artist demonstrations are available each Wednesday during the Holiday Sale. Phone 864-633-5051
